Huskers win twice in rainy Wichita

WICHITA, Kan. — The Nebraska softball team sat through a rain delay and then swept Wichita State Saturday, 3-1 and 9-0.

Three hours and 43 minutes after the original start time of their doubleheader against the Shockers, the Huskers took the field against the Missouri Valley Conference foe.

Nearly two hours later, freshman Kiki Stokes hit a two-out, inside-the-park home run in the top of the seventh inning to give Nebraska a 2-1 lead. She lined a pitch to the gap in left center and ran to third base as the ball rolled to the wall. An injury to Wichita State center fielder Layne Greenlee allowed Stokes the opportunity to make it home for the lead.

An RBI single by Taylor Edwards scored Gabby Banda for an insurance run to give the Huskers the 3-1 lead they would not relinquish.

Tatum Edwards fired a one-hit shutout in the second game, a five-inning victory for Nebraska.

Taylor Edwards, Dawna Tyson, and Alicia Armstrong each notched homers as the Huskers amassed 14 hits.

Sunday’s game against the Shockers was cancelled, so Nebraska will next take the field against UNO at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Omaha.
