ST. GEORGE, Utah — The Creighton baseball team pulled away late to claim a 5-1 victory and salvage a doubleheader split with BYU on Friday afternoon.
The Cougars won the opener 9-0.
The Bluejays (4-1) delivered three two-out runs in the seventh inning to break a 1-all tie in the nightcap.
After the first two Bluejays were retired, junior Jerry Mitchell and junior Brad McKewon drew back-to-back walks. Junior Federico Castagnini beat out an infield single to the left side, and pinch-runner Jordan Makovicka never hesitated rounding third and slid into home ahead of the relay throw to give Creighton a 2-1 lead.
Junior Jake Peter worked Creighton's third walk of the inning to load the bases for junior Mike Gerber, who delivered a two-run single to make it 4-1.
Creighton tacked on an insurance run in the eighth on an RBI single from sophomore Kevin Lamb.
Both teams scratched across a run in the opening frame as McKewon walked and came around to score on a double from Peter. BYU (6-6) answered with a single, sacrifice and an RBI single by Jaycob Brugman.
On the mound, CU freshman Tommy Strunc (1-0) dominated in his second start, limiting the Cougars to one run on four hits and two walks in seven innings.
Adam Miller took the loss (0-3), allowing three runs on five hits and six walks in 6.2 innings.
Gerber paced the Jays' offense with a 3-for-4, two-RBI performance. McKewon drew two walks and scored both times he reached base.
The opening game remained scoreless into the bottom of the fifth when the Cougars took advantage of a two-out error to score three unearned runs.
BYU tacked on three more runs in both the seventh and the eighth innings to hand Creighton its first loss this season.
Cougar starter Desmond Poulson (2-0) limited Creighton to five hits over eight innings, recording six strikeouts and just one walk.
Creighton's Nick Musec (0-1) allowed three unearned runs on five hits and one walk in 4.2 innings.
