Cathedral City, Calif. — Nebraska split its games against Top 25 teams Sunday to conclude play at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
The Huskers beat No. 23 Florida State 2-0 before falling to No. 8 California 1-0. NU dropped to 11-4, with all four losses coming to top-20 opponents. Three of the four have been by two runs or less, including a pair of 1-0 defeats.
In the opener, junior Tatum Edwards tossed a four-hit shutout while driving in the game’s only runs with a single. Edwards (7-3) struck out five and walked one.
The Huskers got another strong pitching performance against Cal. Freshman Emily Lockman (4-1) also allowed four hits, but Cal’s two-time All-American Jolene Henderson (9-2) held the Nebraska offense at bay. She fired a two-hitter for her fifth shutout of the year, retiring 12 of the final 13.
The Bears scored the lone run on a third-inning sacrifice fly. The Huskers put together a rally in the seventh when Brooke Thomason led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. She moved to third on a ground out, but was stranded there.
NU returns to action next weekend in Oklahoma, playing Oklahoma in Norman on Friday, against Oklahoma and Oklahoma State in Oklahoma City on Saturday and against Oklahoma State in Stillwater on Sunday.
