Services will be Sunday for longtime South Omaha businessman Stuart Edward Simon.
The 90-year-old died Thursday at the Rose Blumkin Jewish Home, said daughter Sally Stich of Denver. He had Alzheimer's disease, she said.
“He followed his father's footsteps into the meat business,” Stich said.
But Simon took a slightly different path. His father sold retail meat. The son and a cousin, Irv Simon, sold it wholesale, Stich said.
The cousins founded Simon Meats in 1952 in South Omaha and operated the business until they sold it in 1990.
Stich said that from the 1950s to the 1980s, Simon Meats were served at many widely known Omaha restaurants.
“He was a very physically active man, and his passion was sailing,” Stich said.
He sailed competitively and for pleasure for more than 40 years, often at Lake Manawa and usually with a Snipe boat, she said. That's a 15.5-foot, two-person racing dinghy.
“There was a big Snipe contingency” at Manawa at one time, she said.
“When he couldn't find a crew for a Snipe race, he'd ask either me or my sister. He'd bribe us because we didn't want to go,” Stich said.
One time, Simon told daughter Joan that if they won, he'd get her anything she wanted.
“He didn't think they'd win,” Stich said, but they did.
Joan wanted a dog, something her parents had forbidden. “He was a man of his word,” Stich said, and the family got a puppy.
Simon was a founding member of the Lake Manawa Sailing Association, which he served seven years as commodore, Stich said.
Simon was born in Omaha but lived in Council Bluffs until he was 16. He graduated from Omaha Central High School in 1940.
World War II interrupted his education at the University of Nebraska. He served as an Army second lieutenant in the European Theater.
“He never, ever talked about his Army experiences,” Stich said.
After the war, he graduated from NU.
Stuart Simon was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Esther Fox Simon.
Besides Stich, other survivors include daughter Joan Kotlyar of Israel, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Private graveside services will be Sunday. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Beth El Synagogue, 14506 California St.
