LAUREL, Neb. — A downtown fire Thursday morning destroyed a former bank building and at least part of a nearby building.
A Laurel resident said the town’s fire whistles went off shortly after 5:30 a.m. Thursday.
A spokeswoman for the Laurel Fire Department said that firefighters were expected to be on the scene for much of the day.
The building is on Main Street, west of the post office. Laurel BioComposite, a company that converts a corn byproduct from ethanol processing into plastic, has had offices in the building.
A building next door that housed an insurance office also caught fire and was believed to have been heavily damaged, residents said.
