CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — Sarah Nelson scored 19 points Thursday night, and Carli Tritz became the 24th Creighton player to score 1,000 career points as the Bluejays posted a 73-66 win over Northern Iowa.
The victory at the McLeod Center improved Creighton to 19-6 and 11-3 in the Missouri Valley. The Bluejays, who play Saturday at Bradley, trail Wichita State by one game with four conference games to play.
“It was a good road win,” Creighton coach Jim Flanery said on his postgame radio show. “These guys are tough at home, and we're thrilled to get out of here with a win.
“It makes Saturday's game big because we have a tremendous opportunity to play those last three at home. But it's going to take an effort Saturday similar to tonight.”
Tritz entered the game with 995 points and passed the 1,000-point mark when she made a 3-point shot in the second half. Creighton finished 11 of 28 from beyond the arc, getting a 3-pointer from seven of its nine players.
“We hit 11 3s, and that's big when you can do that on the road,” Flanery said.
Marissa Janning supported Nelson with 17 points, while McKenzie Fujan added 14. Brittni Donaldson scored 24 points and Jacqui Kalin 13 for Northern Iowa (12-13, 7-6).
Creighton used a 10-0 run to take a nine-point lead midway through the first half before settling for a 43-37 lead at halftime. The Panthers cut Creighton's lead to three points with 13:38 to play and to two points with less than seven minutes remaining.
A 3-pointer by Janning hiked Creighton's lead to 61-56, and Tritz followed with the 3-point basket that pushed her above 1,000 points. Ally Jensen capped a 9-2 spurt with another 3-pointer to push Creighton's lead to 67-58.
Nelson made 6 of 12 shots from the field, including 2 of 3 3-point shots. She also had eight rebounds, three assists and two steals in 37 minutes.
“I thought Sarah had a really good game,” Flanery said. “She hasn't been as efficient the last couple of weeks but she did a really good job tonight. She was patient and made plays. She had some nice passes.”
