Winter storm throws a curve to Bluejays and their weekend slate

The winter storm approaching the Omaha area has left Creighton’s weekend baseball schedule up in the air.

The Bluejays were scheduled to play four games at Lamar’s YMBL Cardinal Classic in Beaumont, Texas. Creighton coach Ed Servais said Wednesday that the Bluejays’ flight on Thursday already has been canceled.

“And we were told it doesn’t look good for getting out of here on Friday,” Servais said. “We’re working on some things to try to still make the trip doable, but it’s a little uncertain at this point.”

Creighton was scheduled to play a doubleheader on Friday against Washington and Lamar. A single game was scheduled against Lamar on Saturday, with the finale set for Sunday against Washington.

Servais said he’s contacted Lamar officials and inquired about the possibility of playing a doubleheader on Sunday and a single game on Monday. As of late Wednesday afternoon, Servais said he hadn’t heard back from Lamar.

Servais also has contacted officials in Minnesota to inquire if it would be possible to play some games at the Metrodome in Minneapolis. The Gophers begin a three-game, Friday-to-Sunday series there against Western Michigan.

“We contacted Minnesota about the possibility of piggy-backing on those games,” Servais said. “We haven’t heard anything back yet, and I don’t know if they would be willing to juggle things around at this late date.”

Creighton opened its season with a three-game sweep of Dallas Baptist. Shortstop Alex Staehely said it would be disappointing if the Bluejays cannot play this weekend, but they can’t let that impact their development.

“It would throw off some of the momentum we came out of last week with, but that was just the starting point,” Staehely said. “It was great to get off to a successful start but we can’t get complacent.

“Whether we get this weekend in or not, we have to keep working to get better.”
