BARTLETT, Iowa — An Omaha man was killed Saturday afternoon when the car he was working on fell off jack stands and killed him.
The Fremont County Sheriff's Office received a call Saturday about 2:15 p.m. about a man pinned under a vehicle in Bartlett.
Deputies found Earl L. Schmitt, 57, pinned under a vehicle near a maintenance shop that he owned on the property. Deputies and fire personnel freed Schmitt and began lifesaving measures. Schmitt was pronounced dead at the scene.
An investigation determined that Schmitt and another person were working on the car when it shifted and fell off the jack stands, landing on Schmitt.
Bartlett is south of Council Bluffs, about half-way between the Bluffs and the Missouri stateline just east off Interstate 29.
