University of Nebraska football coach Bo Pelini may be called as a witness on behalf of Alfonzo Dennard, the former Husker cornerback now on trial for allegedly assaulting a Lincoln police officer in April.
A subpoena was issued for Pelini this week. Defense lawyer Terry Dougherty on Friday asked Lancaster County District Judge Stephanie Stacy if Pelini might be allowed to testify via video conference next week if the coach's schedule does not allow him to appear in court.
It is unclear what the defense wants Pelini to testify about, but he could be called as a character witness. He was not present when the incident occurred around the time of bar closing in downtown Lincoln.
Prosecutors are privately interviewing Pelini under oath over the lunch hour. More may be known later Friday.
If Pelini testifies, it could delay the conclusion of the trial later into next week. The case had been expected to go to the jury Tuesday.
