In picking a new lieutenant governor for Nebraska, Gov. Dave Heineman has selected someone who certainly knows his way around the State Capitol.
During eight years as a state senator, Lavon Heidemann earned the respect of his colleagues and others as a capable lawmaker and committee chairman.
As head of the budget-writing Appropriations Committee for six years, he displayed consensus-building skills and earned a reputation as a fair-minded chairman who gave everyone an opportunity to air their ideas. During a time of serious economic difficulty, he dealt capably with a number of complex fiscal matters and crafted responsible budgets.
That studious, fair-minded approach will be a valuable commodity again as he presides over the Legislature's debates on taxes, spending and other tough issues while also serving as a key member of Heineman's administration.
