DALLAS, Texas — The Creighton baseball team exploded for seven runs in the final two innings of its season opener to claim an 11-9 win Friday evening over Dallas Baptist.
Trailing 8-4 and down to its final six outs, Creighton responded with four runs on four hits in the eighth inning to tie the game at 8-8. Freshman Reagan Fowler hit a two-run single to cut the deficit in half. And with the bases loaded, sophomore Kevin Lamb came through with a two-run single to left field to knot the game at 8-8.
Omahan Bryan Sova came on to shut the door on the Patriots (0-1) after they opened the bottom of the eighth with a double.
Creighton scored three more runs in the ninth inning to forge an 11-8 lead. Brad McKewon reached on a single to third, and Federico Castagnini walked to put runners at first and second. Jake Peter followed with a sharp single to center, giving the Jays a 9-8 lead. A wild throw allowed Castagnini to score as well, making it 10-8. Mike Gerber added an insurance run via a single to center.
Sova (1-0), a junior from Omaha Creighton Prep and Scottsdale Community College, limited the Patriots to one run on two hits in the ninth to earn his first Bluejay victory.
