A new statue of baseball great and Sarpy County resident Bob Gibson will soon be ready for public viewing at Werner Park.
Gibson, a St. Louis Cardinals pitcher who got his start at Omaha Tech High School and Creighton University, will be depicted throwing a pitch in the 8-foot bronze statue.
The county spent about $25,000 in tourism funds for the statue, and the rest came from donations.
"The sculpture is meant to honor Bob Gibson’s great career and will also be the centerpiece of a Walk of Fame, which will recognize native-born Nebraskans who are in the Baseball Hall of Fame," Bob Batt, president of the Sarpy County Sports Commission, said in a statement. "We want this project to become a year-round attraction and focal point for Werner Park."
The county is selling tickets to the April 11 unveiling and a banquet the night before at the Embassy Suites in La Vista. Tickets are $100 or $250 for VIP tickets, and they’ll be on sale next week through a yet-to-be unveiled website.
