Huskers start four-game series with Buffs in 2018

LINCOLN — Nebraska has found another of its old league rivals to agree to a nonconference football series, temporarily restoring Big Eight-Big 12 tradition for the programs.

The Huskers will host Colorado at Memorial Stadium on Sept. 8, 2018, the first of a four-game series that will extend into the 2024 season.

The teams will meet in Boulder on Sept. 7, 2019, and again on Sept. 9, 2023, before concluding with a matchup in Lincoln on Sept. 7, 2024.

There’s a three-year break in the series because Nebraska is already set to renew its rivalry with Oklahoma during that stretch. The Huskers are scheduled to play in Norman in 2021 before hosting OU at Memorial Stadium a year later.

“We are pleased to add another quality opponent to our future nonconference schedule,” said Jeff Jamrog, Nebraska associate athletic director for football. “It is great to have future games with both Colorado and Oklahoma, two of our long-time rivals in the Big Eight and Big 12 conferences.”

Colorado and Nebraska left the Big 12 before the 2011 season. The Buffaloes went to the Pac-12, while the Huskers joined the Big Ten.

As has been the case in several conference realignment circumstances, the severance of the NU-CU rivalry was seen as an unfortunate consequence of the changing landscape within college sports.

The Huskers and the Buffs, who first met on the field in 1898, played annually from 1948 to 2010. Their matchup decided the Big Eight championship in the final seven seasons of the league’s existence.

The game was moved to the day after Thanksgiving when the Big 12 was formed in 1996. The Huskers hold an edge of 49-18-2 in the all-time series, including wins in the last three meetings.

“There is a lot of great history between Nebraska and Colorado on the football field, so I think this will be an outstanding series for both schools,” NU coach Bo Pelini said. “I think our fans will enjoy the matchups, particularly those in western Nebraska who can make the short drive out to the games in Colorado.”

The series contract states that the visiting team will receive $300,000 for appearing in each of the four games and there’s a buyout clause of $1 million, according to Colorado’s official website.
