Dixon chooses Nebraska after all

LINCOLN — Marquis Newsome watched Tre'Vell Dixon put down the pen and exhale Wednesday.

The stress of the recruiting process — and particularly of the last few days — was finally lifted.

“Right when he signed his papers is the first time I actually seen him smile in a while,” said Newsome, head coach at West St. Mary High in Baldwin, La. “It's the first time I saw him enjoy the process.”

Dixon became the 26th and final recruit for Nebraska, punctuating this Husker class when he signed and faxed his letter-of-intent Wednesday. But only 18 hours before, it had appeared that the receiver-defensive back might be headed for Arizona State, and one recruiting website even had him on the Sun Devils' commitment list Wednesday morning.

Newsome said Dixon had been tugged at by “some outside influences” since first committing to Nebraska last winter. He had decommitted once last summer, committed back to NU last month and was hanging in the balance again Tuesday night when Newsome and West St. Mary Principal Derrick White told him to go home and sleep on it.

In the meantime, Newsome called the NU staff not only to keep them apprised but to let them know it might take some last-second work.

Dixon then woke up Wednesday ready to stick with the school that had stuck with him, including NU head coach Bo Pelini and assistant coach Terry Joseph.

“He was really indecisive,” Newsome said. “It was a major decision and he didn't want to make the wrong choice. But he always loved the idea of playing for Coach Pelini and always loved Coach Joseph.”

Dixon was West St. Mary's quarterback the last two seasons but is projected as a receiver at NU. Newsome said he's gifted enough athletically to play offense or defense at the Big Ten level, but believes receiver is the best fit.

“Because he wants the ball in his hands,” Newsome said.

Husker turnovers: A slippery slope
Bo Pelini has coached 68 games at Nebraska. When NUís turnover margin is positive or even, the Huskers are 35-2. When they lose the turnover battle, theyíre 13-18. Why hasnít Nebraska joined the nationís elite? More than anything, itís turnovers.
