Creighton’s Johnny Torres was named the national assistant coach of the year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America at the organization’s awards banquet.
Torres received the Glenn “Mooch” Myernick award after he helped guide the Bluejays to a 17-4-3 record and their second consecutive appearance in a College Cup. Earlier this winter, he earned Midwest Region assistant coach of the year honors for a second consecutive season.
Creighton won the Missouri Valley Conference regular-season and tournament titles for a second straight season. The Bluejays tied the MVC team record for the fewest goals allowed (one) in a Valley season set by CU in 2011.
In 2012, the Bluejays advanced to the College Cup in consecutive seasons for the first time in program history and recorded their fifth College Cup appearance all-time (1996, 2000, 2002, 2011 and 2012). CU entered the 2012 College Cup on a 14-match unbeaten streak before falling 1-0 to eventual national champion Indiana in a national semifinal.
Creighton finished the season ranked among the top 20 in four NCAA statistical categories: team goals against average (0.8, No. 18), shutout percentage (0.46, No. 18), total goals (39, No. 19) and save percentage (0.831, No. 20).
Torres, an MVC and Creighton Hall of Famer, just completed his sixth season on the Creighton bench, during which time the Bluejays have gone 86-20-18, won five regular-season MVC titles, advanced to five NCAA tournaments and appeared in two College Cups.
Creighton men’s soccer fans are invited to attend the team’s postseason banquet scheduled for Saturday starting at 6 p.m., upstairs at the Old Mattress Factory (13th & Cass Streets). All of the coaches and many of the players from Creighton’s 2012 College Cup team will be in attendance and several awards will be presented.
Tickets for the event, which is being hosted by the Hillstoppers, are $40 per person. To register online, go to www.creighton.edu/athleticevents. For more information or to make a reservation by phone or e-mail, contact Barb Epps at 402-280-5577 or via e-mail at email@example.com.
