Take me out to the ballpark and go north to find the future site of Papillion-La Vista's newest elementary school.
The location, revealed Monday night, is in the North Shore housing development, just north of Werner Park, home to the Omaha Storm Chasers minor league baseball team.
School board members voted to purchase the nearly 11-acre site for $37,500 an acre, or $412,500.
The elementary school is one of two schools the district will build with funds from a $59.6 million bond issue approved last November.
Construction of the elementary school is estimated to cost $10 million. The district also plans to build a $26 million middle school. Its location has not yet been announced.
The new elementary school will relieve overcrowding at Portal Elementary School. It also will accommodate western growth that would otherwise feed into Patriot Elementary School, which is also over its capacity.
The new middle school will relieve enrollment pressure on Papillion and La Vista Junior High Schools. Those schools are projected to exceed capacity in 2015.
Also Monday, board members selected Ray and Associates to conduct the search to replace retiring Superintendent Rick Black.
The firm will be paid a base fee of $16,000, plus expenses.
Black notified the board last fall that he will retire effective June 30 after a 40-year career in education, the last 5½ as superintendent of Nebraska's fourth-largest school district.
