No. 17 Huskers dominate Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. — The Nebraska wrestling team completed a conference road sweep Saturday.

One day after winning by one point at No. 11 Michigan, the 17th-ranked Huskers controlled No. 18 Northwestern, winning seven of the 10 matches to take the dual 25-12.

Nebraska’s marquee win Saturday came in the 157-pound match as James Green, ranked seventh nationally, edged Jason Welch 9-8. Welch, who finished fourth at nationals last season, came into the match ranked second with a 17-0 record.

Green bolted to a 6-1 lead in the first period and led 6-3 entering the final period before holding off Welch.

But by the time Green stepped on the mat, the Huskers already had secured the win.

Nebraska jumped to a 12-3 lead as the dual started with the 174-pound showdown between Robert Kokesh, ranked fourth nationally, and No. 9 Lee Munster.

Kokesh, who decisioned Munster 10-2 two weeks ago at the Midlands Invitational, took a 4-2 lead in the first period and built from there for an 11-3 major decision. Kokesh has won 19 straight matches for Nebraska.

Josh Ihnen followed with a 16-0 technical fall at 184, and when heavyweight Spencer Johnson earned a 6-0 decision over Jacob Berkowitz, the Huskers had a 12-3 lead.

Nebraska held a 12-6 advantage after a loss at 125 before winning the next four matches. The Huskers got wins from Shawn Nagel (133), Ridge Kiley (141), Jake Sueflohn (149) and Green during that stretch.

The Huskers, who dropped their first two Big Ten matches, bring momentum into Friday’s home dual against No. 6 Illinois.
