Tennessee hitter transfers to NU

With the start of spring semester classes Monday, the Nebraska volleyball team officially welcomed its newest member. Nebraska coach John Cook announced the addition of All-American outside hitter Kelsey Robinson, who transferred after three decorated seasons at Tennessee.

Robinson, the 2011 Southeastern Conference player of the year, will join the Huskers with one season of eligibility remaining. She originally confirmed her intention to transfer to Nebraska to The World-Herald on December 19.

“Kelsey is a great addition to our team,” Cook said. “She is a highly skilled outside hitter and accomplished beach player. She will bring experience, leadership and a competitive fire that will impact our team. We tried to recruit her out of high school and feel honored to have her finally be a Husker. Kelsey had many choices but ultimately chose Nebraska with the idea of being a part of history-the first season at the Devaney Center.”

Robinson was named an honorable mention All-American and a first-team All-SEC pick this season while ranking third in the conference with 4.22 kills per set. A six-rotation player and skilled passer, Robinson added 3.50 digs per set for the Volunteers, which finished 22-8 this season.

In 2011, Robinson became the first Tennessee player to be named SEC player of the year after leading the conference in kills (4.52 per set), points (5.15 per set) and double-doubles (23).

Her addition should bring much-needed experience to a young outside hitter position. Multi-year starters Gina Mancuso and Hannah Werth exhausted their eligibility at the end of the season and plan to begin professional careers in Puerto Rico.

In 2013, the Huskers will return sophomore Kelsey Fien and redshirt sophomore Alicia Ostrander at outside hitter, and add incoming freshmen Amber and Kadie Rolfzen from Papillion-LaVista South.

The Rolfzens, both high school All-Americans, graduated high school a semester early and also joined the program on Monday.

Robinson’s passing skills should also help NU offset the loss of two-year starting libero Lara Dykstra, who left the program in December and transferred to Pepperdine.
