Husker basketball player charged with DUI, leaving scene of accident

Nebraska basketball redshirt Deverell Biggs out of Omaha Central has been cited on suspicion of driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident.

Biggs, a 20-year-old junior, was waiting for the stoplight to change at Howard and 15th Streets about 1:40 a.m. Sunday, according to an Omaha police report. A Bellevue man stopped behind him, also facing west, told police Biggs remained parked in his Chevrolet Suburban through several light changes.

Biggs then backed his car into the Bellevue man's Mercedes, got out of his car and briefly talked with the man but drove away before the two could exchange information, according to police.

Police found Biggs and his vehicle near 30th and Lake Streets. His vehicle was impounded about 2:20 a.m.

Biggs, who turns 21 in February, had a blood-alcohol content of .134, according to the report. The legal limit for drivers 21 or older in Nebraska is .08. Police estimated damage to the Bellevue man's Mercedes at about $1,500.

Nebraska coach Tim Miles said Wednesday that he learned about Biggs' alleged offenses — both misdemeanors — shortly before taking the court Sunday night against UTEP in the championship game of the Sun Carnival Classic in El Paso, Texas.

“I told Deverell we would meet on the 26th and handle it,'' Miles said. “I'm obviously greatly disappointed in the report and Deverell's actions.

“I'll gather more information before making a decision on disciplinary action.''

Biggs was a two-time first-team All-Nebraska point guard at Omaha Central. In junior college at Seward County (Kan.) Community College last season, he was a first-team All-American.

When Biggs accepted an NU scholarship in April 2012, he became the first in-state player to sign with the Huskers in 11 years.
