More than two months after the City of Omaha finance director announced her resignation, Mayor Jim Suttle has named her replacement.
Leslie Schaefer, the city's treasurer and the finance manager for the city and county's technology arm, will replace Pam Spaccarotella on an interim basis as of Jan. 1.
Schaefer's term will officially end at the end of June. The city will hold a mayoral election in the spring.
Schaefer also has experience in the private sector, having worked for Financial Network Investment Corp., GlenFed Brokerage Services, Merrill Lynch and Mutual of Omaha.
She was born and raised in Omaha and graduated with a bachelor's degree in finance and accounting from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
City officials were not able to provide Schaefer's salary late Friday, except to say it won't be as much as Spaccarotella made.
Spaccarotella's salary was a source of controversy throughout her tenure. She started at a salary of $180,000, almost $80,000 higher than her predecessor. She later took a $40,000 salary cut after questions were raised about her pay.
Then, last year, Suttle quietly gave Spaccarotella a $25,000 raise and continued paying her $165,000 even though the city budget didn't account for that pay increase.
