When couples first meet, they look for common connections, something that might bond them.
Plenty of those ties, plus powerful advice from a father, pulled Paul and Mary Beth Knust together.
Paul and Mary Beth were single parents when they met in November 2006.
Their young daughters participated in the same Omaha dance group, and Paul’s daughter invited Mary Beth’s daughter to a sleepover.
Paul and Mary Beth started chatting when she dropped her daughter off and found out they had a lot in common.
They knew a lot of the same people because both graduated from Omaha high schools in 1982. Paul attended Creighton Prep, and Mary Beth went to Central.
Plus, it turned out they had roots in Howells, Neb. Paul’s dad grew up there, and so did Mary Beth’s mom.
Not only that, Paul and Mary Beth discovered that his dad and her mom dated as teenagers.
Also, Paul’s aunt and Mary Beth’s mom were friends growing up in Howells.
Paul and Mary Beth decided to meet for lunch the next day, and invited Paul’s dad, Ron Knust.
Paul’s dad loved meeting Mary Beth and reminiscing about their connections in Howells.
Within a few days of that lunch, Paul’s dad went to a doctor’s appointment in Omaha because he was feeling exhausted, having night sweats and other symptoms.
He and his family got shocking news.
He was given two weeks to live and began getting hospice care at his Omaha home.
A few days before he died, he passed along a message to Paul’s brother who was alone with him at the bedside.
He said Mary Beth was the right woman for Paul.
After dating for six months, Mary Beth and Paul married on April 28, 2007. They have five children between them, ages 10 to 17, and love attending all their school activities.
Paul says his dad was a smart man, who always gave good advice.
When it came to Mary Beth, Paul says, his dad nailed it.
