Huskers gain one, lose one for 2013

LINCOLN — On a wild day for Nebraska's 2013 recruiting class, the Huskers lost a key pledge to Alabama, but gained one from Wisconsin.

First, the gain: Safety D.J. Singleton switched from Wisconsin — where he signed for the 2012 class — to NU after an official visit this weekend. Singleton failed to academically qualify to play for the Badgers this year, and opened up his recruiting after Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema left for Arkansas.

Enter the Huskers, who last year offered the 6-foot-3, 200-pounder from Jersey City, N.J., out of St. Peter's Prep.

“I committed because it was a better place for me and my family,” Singleton told The World-Herald via text message. “I liked Wisconsin, but with the coaching changes, I felt that it was a better move.”

Singleton, who was rated a high three-star prospect by Rivals, ESPN and 247Sports and a four-star prospect by Scout, can enroll in January and expects to compete early for playing time at safety. Out of St. Peter's last year, Singleton had offers from the Badgers, Rutgers, Michigan, Michigan State, Tennessee and Miami, among other schools.

Now the loss: Spanish Fort, Ala., defensive back prospect Jonathan Cook switched his commitment from Nebraska to Alabama. Cook confirmed the switch to The World-Herald via text.

A 6-foot-1, 180-pound corner who rated as a three- or four-star prospect depending on the recruiting service, Cook had originally been offered a grayshirt to the Crimson Tide, but a strong senior season for Spanish Fort — which won the 5A state title — put him on Tennessee and Auburn's radar. Alabama offered and Cook accepted.

In a text to The World-Herald, Cook called Bama his “dream school” and felt “very good” about switching his commitment.

Cook had been Nebraska's only true cornerback commit for the class. NU has 16 commitments for its class.

Husker turnovers: A slippery slope
Bo Pelini has coached 68 games at Nebraska. When NUís turnover margin is positive or even, the Huskers are 35-2. When they lose the turnover battle, theyíre 13-18. Why hasnít Nebraska joined the nationís elite? More than anything, itís turnovers.
