Husker graduate assistant Marrow accepts job at Kentucky

LINCOLN — Nebraska graduate assistant Vince Marrow’s rumored departure to Kentucky became fact Wednesday. Marrow confirmed to The World-Herald he’d taken a full-time assistant job under friend and new Wildcats coach Mark Stoops.

Stoops, like Marrow and NU coach Bo Pelini, hails from Youngstown (Ohio) Cardinal Mooney High School. It’s Stoops’ first head coaching job. He’s been Florida State’s defensive coordinator the past three years.

“We grew up together,” Marrow told the Louisville Courier-Journal. “My childhood friend and high school buddy got a job, and I’m here to help him turn this thing around.”

Aside from a confirmation he’d taken the UK job, Marrow didn’t respond to a request for an interview with The World-Herald.

On the road recruiting, Pelini said via text that he recommended Marrow to Stoops for the Kentucky job and called it “a good opportunity.” The Huskers currently have no open full-time assistant jobs on their staff.

Marrow had been actively recruiting for NU, getting an NCAA waiver to fill in for Barney Cotton, who continues to rehab from surgery he had early this year. Marrow helped land recent commit Antoine Miles, a defensive end from Ohio, and had been the lead recruiter on California junior college tight end Beau Sandland. Sandland informed several recruiting sites Wednesday that Nebraska remained in his top three.

Marrow also assisted Nebraska in landing 2013 prospects Marcus McWilson, Courtney Love, Greg Hart and Kevin Gladney, but the Huskers have several more coaches — including Pelini and offensive coordinator Tim Beck — with strong Ohio ties.

Marrow’s son Mike is a fullback for the Huskers.

Husker turnovers: A slippery slope
Bo Pelini has coached 68 games at Nebraska. When NUís turnover margin is positive or even, the Huskers are 35-2. When they lose the turnover battle, theyíre 13-18. Why hasnít Nebraska joined the nationís elite? More than anything, itís turnovers.
