The five-member board of the Nebraska Public Service Commission has unanimously selected Steve Meradith of Lincoln as the commission’s new executive director, effective Jan. 1.
Meradith replaces Mike Hybl, who has been named chief of staff for Sen.-elect Deb Fischer after serving the commission for five years.
Meradith recently worked as a consultant and lobbyist for telecommunications industry consultant Consortia Consulting. He also has worked for Windstream, ALLTEL, Aliant, Lincoln Telecommunications and Lincoln Telephone.
Meradith, chosen from among a number of applicants, will earn $105,000, the same salary Hybl earned in his first year, said Commissioner Anne Boyle of Omaha.
Boyle said that when the commission worked with Meradith when he was in the private sector, she was impressed by his experience and demeanor. “I always found him to be very straightforward and honest. He’s calm and he’s levelheaded. He addresses problems as they come up.”
Meradith will oversee the commission’s staff of 41 employees. The commission is responsible for regulating activities in the telecommunications, natural gas, transportation, grain warehousing and manufactured housing industries.
