La Vern Schmitz
Defiance, Iowa Corporal, U.S. Army
Served from 1953 to '57 with the 453rd Engineer Battalion in Korea.
Memory: “We did roads, airfields, railroad grade, ammunition dumps, bunkers. We worked from Pusan to Inchon. At Pusan ... the whole city was on fire. I took a (Caterpillar tractor) down there and pushed the huts down. They were straw huts and it went pretty fast. I spent 18 months over there and was glad when it was over.”
