Lace up your skates and go out for a spin
The Ralston Arena's public ice-skating program is in its inaugural season. Public skating is available from noon to 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Sundays.
Skating costs $5 per person, which includes rental skates.
The arena also offers a 1:30 p.m. Sunday Learn to Skate class after the open skate. The class is aimed at children, but adults can take part.
Cornhusker band holds concert
There is no place like Nebraska for the Cornhusker Marching Band to present its annual Highlights Concert. The music will begin 7:30 p.m. Friday at Pershing Center, 226 Centennial Mall South in downtown Lincoln.
Tickets — $15 general admission and $10 for students/seniors — are available from the Pershing Center box office at 402-441-7766 or through Ticketmaster (additional Ticketmaster fees apply).
The band will present the music performed at each of its halftime shows, in addition to pre-game music.
“It's pretty much everything we've put on the field for the season,” said Tony Falcone, who is in his 11th year directing the band and his 15th year at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
The halftime shows this season included a program titled “Cartoons for Grown-Ups,” with themes from television shows “The Simpsons,” “American Dad,” “Family Guy” and “Jonny Quest”; music from “Phantom of the Opera”; a tribute to the late pop singer Whitney Houston; a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the formation of the Rolling Stones; and a “Go Big Red, White and Blue” patriotic show.
