Police are urging Omahans to take the proper steps to stay safe during the shopping season.
Police said they were working closely with local malls to provide an increased presence over the holiday season.
Even with additional police in the area, authorities said, shoppers should make the right efforts to keep themselves safe.
Police tips for safe shopping:
— Park and walk in well-lighted, busy areas.
— Stay away from overgrown bushes and trees.
— Use valet parking or an attended garage if you are alone.
— Shop at locations that have police or security patrols.
— Never display or “flash” your cash or valuable items.
— Don’t leave valuables in your vehicle, or at least put them in the trunk.
— Don’t wear expensive jewelry while shopping.
— Keep the amount of cash you carry to a minimum.
— Carry only one major credit card.
— Carry cash in an unusual place instead of in your purse or wallet.
— Pay attention to your surroundings, people and vehicles in the area.
— Do not approach situations that feel unsafe.
— Walk with confidence.
— Do not overload yourself with packages.
— Carry your purse close to your body and your wallet in your front pocket.
— Do not be distracted by talking on a cell phone or wearing headphones.
— Report suspicious people.
— Ask security for an escort if you feel unsafe.
