Too many people were on top of each other in the Omaha trailer house where Betty Navarro and her 7-year-old daughter had lived for four years.
So even though Navarro and her brother co-owned the trailer, she decided it was time to leave her roommates behind and move out. But the timing and costs of the move left Navarro and her daughter in a financial bind — one that The World-Herald's Goodfellows charity was able to ease with $300 in one-time emergency assistance.
Navarro, 28, moved in September into a town house that cost $600 a month, compared with $400 in monthly lot rent for the trailer.
Under normal conditions, she said, she can afford the higher rent on her income as an inbound sales representative at an Omaha company.
But paying the security deposit on the town house used up Navarro's meager cash reserve.
“I had been trying to catch up since I moved in,” she said.
So Navarro's Thanksgiving brightened considerably when Goodfellows made up the difference in her November town house rent. She and her brother plan to sell the trailer.
Goodfellows uses the bulk of its donations to provide timely help to people, year-round, in cases where it will help them get back on their feet financially.
The charity also distributes food vouchers for holiday meals and provides clothing for needy children during the school year.
The annual fund drive for Goodfellows continues to the end of the year. The World-Herald pays all administrative costs, so all the money donated is used to help in the community.
The rent assistance “took a lot of stress off me,” Navarro said.
“I was so focused on the bills that I couldn't focus on Christmas.”
Now, she adds, “I'm pretty much worry-free.”
Goodfellows provides assistance to thousands of families each year. It has raised and distributed nearly $10 million since 1945. With The World-Herald paying all administrative costs, every dollar donated to Goodfellows goes directly to disadvantaged families – helping them with one-time urgent needs, providing holiday meals and providing funds for clothing, shoes and coats.
