In Sunday's World-Herald, pharmacy owner Chas Lierk tells the story of being taken hostage in his store in Alliance. Halfway through the 14-hour standoff on June 12, Lierk made his escape and was shot twice by gunman Andres "Andy" Gonzalez.
World-Herald photojournalist Rebecca Gratz and reporter Joe Duggan covered the final hours of the standoff. The same team learned more about Gonzalez through interviews with his family members.
After a grand jury inquiry concluded in November, Chas and Ellen Lierk agreed to share their story with The World-Herald.
Information was gathered from more than three hours of interviews, which included walking through the store as Lierk described the key events of his experience. Security video footage from the pharmacy, which caught the hectic first moments of the robbery and standoff, also provided source material.
Pick up Sunday's paper to read the full account of Lierk's experience. Omaha.com will have the story plus full security-camera footage and additional comments from Lierk.
