TD Ameritrade named top college field

Even actor Kevin Costner, a longtime College World Series supporter who starred in such baseball classics as “Bull Durham'' and “Field of Dreams,'' probably would be proud.

Omaha's TD Ameritrade Park, home to the CWS, was selected as the 2012 College Baseball Field of the Year by the Sports Turf Managers Association.

A panel of 11 judges scored ballparks on playability and appearance of the surface, innovative solutions, effective use of budget and development of a sound agronomic program.

“The challenges that TD Ameritrade Park Omaha faces and the innovative solutions turf manager Dan Blank employs are truly amazing and award-worthy,” Kim Heck, CEO of the SportsTurf Managers Association, said in a statement.

The ballpark just north of downtown has 24,000 seats and has hosted the past two College World Series after a 50-year-plus run for the CWS at the former Rosenblatt Stadium in South Omaha. TD Ameritrade Park is managed by the Metropolitan Entertainment and Convention Authority.

The Field of the Year award honors baseball, football, softball and sports fields in three categories: professional, college and university, and school and parks.

Jack Trice Stadium at Iowa State University in Ames was honored as college and university football field of the year.
