For Christopher Simms, there is nothing more important than being a stand-up dad for his 2-year-old son, Brenden, whom he proudly calls “The Poster Child for No. 1 Son.”
After separating from Brenden's mother, Simms moved from his two-bedroom apartment into a more affordable, one-bedroom unit.
His monthly SSI government check, roughly $700, covers his rent, utility bills, gas and food. That doesn't leave much for extras — or for savings.
Then Simms hit a rougher patch in September. Having been unable to keep up with routine maintenance, his truck broke down. He was faced with a hefty repair bill and limited options for transportation.
That's when a community support service worker at Heartland Family Services connected Simms with Goodfellows and its emergency assistance program.
The World-Herald's charity provides onetime financial assistance to people who find themselves in unavoidable emergencies. In addition to that year-round work, Goodfellows provides clothing for schoolchildren and offers grocery vouchers so the needy can have a holiday meal. The annual fund drive for Goodfellows is now under way. The World-Herald pays all administrative costs, so all donations go to work in the our community.
Goodfellows wrote a $500 check to pay Simms' rent, making it possible for the single dad to pay his other bills without Brenden's even suspecting that his dad was struggling.
“That's my job as a parent,” Simms said. “He shouldn't have to worry about anything other than kid stuff. It's my duty to make sure he doesn't have to carry any of my problems on his shoulders.”
Goodfellows provides assistance to thousands of families each year. It has raised and distributed nearly $10 million since 1945. With The World-Herald paying all administrative costs, every dollar donated to Goodfellows goes directly to disadvantaged families – helping them with one-time urgent needs, providing holiday meals and providing funds for clothing, shoes and coats.
