SIOUX FALLS — The newly elected president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe said he’s ready to hit the ground running once he is sworn in next month.
Bryan Brewer, 65, beat incumbent John Yellow Bird Steele to become president of the tribe, located on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in southwestern South Dakota.
Brewer said people living on the reservation are ready for change and to see improvements. Some of the most pressing matters he plans to address include housing shortages, high unemployment, alcoholism and violence.
Brewer said he does not support legalizing alcohol on the reservation at this time because Pine Ridge does not have the infrastructure in place to support the potential uptick in violence that could be associated with legalizing alcohol.
Brewer’s inauguration ceremony is set for Dec. 7.
