Authorities are investigating a possible attempted robbery at the Champion Post Office on Monday.
According to Chase County Sheriff Kevin Mueller, a man entered the post office shortly before 11:20 a.m. and allegedly demanded money from the safe.
A post office employee claimed to be assaulted by the man before getting away and hiding in a locked bathroom. The employee was later taken to the Chase County Hospital with minor injuries. The employee was treated and released.
Sheriff’s deputies arrived on scene at 11:26 a.m. and found the employee in the bathroom. The man allegedly left the scene on foot, and no arrests have been made. According to Mueller, nothing was taken from the post office.
Mueller said that the Chase County Sheriff’s Department has turned the investigation over to the United States Postal Inspection Service and is now assisting the investigation.
Champion is about seven miles southwest of Imperial in southwest Nebraska.
