Alcohol and speed contributed to an early Monday crash that sent a driver and his passenger to the hospital, Omaha police said.
Brian Lovejoy, 22, and Ruth Blanco, 21, were taken to the Nebraska Medical Center in critical condition after the 12:40 a.m. crash near 16th and Sprague Streets. Lovejoy suffered a head injury and Blanco suffered stomach and possible internal injuries, authorities said.
Omaha police said Lovejoy was driving east on Sprague Street when his 2006 Suzuki Forenza struck a telephone pole on 16th Street.
Accident reconstruction investigators reported a strong odor of alcohol at the crash site. Speed also was considered a factor in the crash, according to the reconstructionists, who based their determination on the amount of damage to the SUV as well as roadway evidence at the scene.
