If the drop in temperatures didn't remind you that winter is nearing, this scene will: Outdoor skating rinks are being prepared in the Omaha metropolitan area.
The rink at the University of Nebraska Medical Center will open Tuesday and be open through March 1. The ConAgra Foods ice rink will operate Dec. 14 through Jan. 6.
The UNMC rink is east of 42nd Street, midway between Emile Street and Dewey Avenue. Hours are Tuesdays through Fridays, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sundays, noon to 8 p.m. It is closed Mondays, and Christmas and New Year's Days. The admission is $7 with skate rental, $5 without skate rental.
At the rink on the ConAgra Foods campus at 10th and Harney Streets, the $5 admission includes skate rental and benefits the Food Bank for the Heartland. Kids younger than 5 skate free. The ConAgra Foods Foundation will match ice rink donations dollar for dollar up to $100,000. Hours are Sundays through Thursdays, 1 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays, 1 p.m. to midnight; and Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The rink is closed Christmas and New Year's Days.
