When the “freebies” go up for bid inside The World-Herald Building, it's a sure sign that the season of giving is at hand.
Goodfellows' 2012 holiday fundraising campaign began inside the newspaper Friday with a silent auction of promotional items that had been sent to The World-Herald.
It's one of two occasions a year — the other is a spring book sale — in which The World-Herald's 600-plus employees can chip in to their own charity and pick up bargains along the way.
“Besides donations from the many employees who contribute to the drive, this is a way for more employees to get involved in Goodfellows in a fun way,” said Joel Long, Goodfellows' executive director and The World-Herald's public relations director.
The World-Herald's ethics policy forbids employees from claiming the promotional items for free for personal use.
Each sale typically contributes between $1,000 and $3,000 to Goodfellows, Long said. Small as the totals are, the sales offer a practical way to dispose of the toys, shirts, beauty products, housewares, software packages and the like that the newspaper receives from promoters trying to build awareness about products.
Similarly, book publishers, recording artists and movie producers send advance copies of books, CDs and DVDs in the hope of gaining published reviews.
The spring book sale often features 1,000 or so book and media titles, Long said, and the fall silent auction may have as many as 100 items.
Goodfellows provides assistance to thousands of families each year. It has raised and distributed nearly $10 million since 1945. With The World-Herald paying all administrative costs, every dollar donated to Goodfellows goes directly to disadvantaged families – helping them with one-time urgent needs, providing holiday meals and providing funds for clothing, shoes and coats.
