November 21, 1967: The Planning Board, as expected, recommended unanimously that Omaha annex Millard. The action came in an administrative session minutes after the board held an 11-and-a-half-hour hearing. The annexation ordinances were approved and sent to the City Council. One ordinance called for the annexation of all of Millard, including a Sarpy County cemetery recently taken in by Millard, and the Millard airport. Omaha Planning Director Alden F. Aust said if the courts decided the cemetery and airport were not a legal part of Millard, the annexation would not affect those areas.
1934: Inadequacy of the present school system to prepare children for the responsibilities of a changing social world was stressed in a “jury panel” discussion at Omaha North High School. About 250 attended the program sponsored by the Parent-Teacher Association. “The school does little to prepare for parenthood and for assuming individual responsibility for the effective cooperation of the social group in a democratic society,” said Irvin Hammer, professor of education at the Municipal University of Omaha.
1986: If Congress did not approve federal highway funds by April 1, Nebraska would have to delay $84 million in highway projects originally scheduled for the 1987 construction season, said Ray Hogrefe, state engineer and highway director. Congressional delay had already affected $38 million in projects, Hogrefe said during a Nebraska Highway Users Conference. Another $35 million in road projects and $11 million in county and city bridge replacement work would be delayed if the measure did not pass by April 1, Hogrefe said.
2007: The Nebraska State Patrol seized almost 40 pounds of cocaine during a routine traffic stop near Lincoln. An eastbound 2000 Ford Windstar minivan with no plates was stopped near the 27th Street interchange on Interstate 80. The driver, a Phoenix man, allowed a search, which produced 15 packages containing a total of 39.2 pounds of cocaine, said Deb Collins, a State Patrol spokeswoman. The cocaine has an estimated street value of between $750,000 and $1 million, Collins said.
