An Omaha bar owner reported that an ATM was stolen by someone who apparently hid inside the tavern until everyone else had left.
James Stapleton, owner of the Blue Jay Bar and Grill at 2416 Davenport St., told police that an automated teller machine — loaded with $2,540 in $20 bills — was taken between 3 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Sunday.
Stapleton said surveillance cameras show a man emerging from the men's restroom after closing and letting two other men inside the bar.
“The one guy hid in the mop closet inside the bathroom,” Stapleton said. “When he let the other guys in, they rocked the machine until its bolts ripped up out of the floor.”
The thieves, who wore masks, needed about 14 minutes to complete the job and didn't take anything else, Stapleton said. Surveillance video from a nearby business captured the getaway. The ATM was loaded onto a vehicle.
Stapleton, 30, said it's the only theft from the Blue Jay in the two years he's been an owner.
“We're just glad no one was here cleaning or anything and surprised this guy.”
