The timing appears impeccable: A mountain lion was reportedly spotted Thursday in Bennington just two days before the Penn State Nittany Lions battle the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Lincoln.
Marty Bilek, chief deputy with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, said authorities were notified about 10 a.m. Thursday by a landscaper who reported spotting a cougar crossing Bennington Road between 156th and 168th Streets.
Bennington Road is just two miles inside the Washington County line, Bilek noted. An elementary school is situated at 156th Street and Bennington Road, and a high school is at 168th and Bennington Road, with a playground between the two schools.
“It wasn't coming too close to humans. It wasn't sick. It wasn't threatening anyone,'' he said. “And it wasn't too close to the playground. But we're going to be vigilant on this.”
Bilek added that the Sheriff's Office has received mountain lion sighting reports from Bennington-area farmers in the past.
