GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — Mead made its district-final loss a distant memory with a first-round win Thursday in the Class D-2 volleyball tournament.
The No. 3 Raiders swept No. 10 Brady 25-21, 25-20, 25-21 in their first match since Giltner won the district title on a sweep.
“We went into practice last Friday and it was one of our best practices,” Mead coach Keshia Havelka said.
Strong serving by Miranda Charles, who had four aces in the match, further settled down Mead (27-4) in its first tournament appearance since 2006. She helped open a 7-1 lead in the first set, although Brady (23-8) recovered quickly and played the Raiders close in all three sets.
“Brady was a tough team. I thought we were pretty comfortable in the third set and here they come,” Havelka said. “We wanted to be aggressive in serving, do well in serve-receive passing and play balls over the net that we needed to.”
Sophomore outside hitter Lauren Taylor led the Raiders with eight kills. Haley Konecky, a sophomore middle, had five kills and three blocks for Mead.
Valerie Most had 10 kills and Madison Elliott nine for Brady, which took third place in 2011.
