GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — Jaclyn Luzum's 26th kill of the match let Exeter-Milligan escape in the fifth set with a win over top-ranked Howells-Dodge in the first round of the Class D-1 state volleyball tournament at Grand Island Central Catholic on Thursday.
The Timberwolves won 25-20, 23-25, 22-25, 25-22, 19-17.
In the fifth set, Howells-Dodge (28-4) grabbed a 14-13 lead with a kill by Heather Muller.
Nine rallies later, the No. 3 Timberwolves were left celebrating after Luzum's match-clinching kill.
“We made some mistakes that we normally don't,” Howells-Dodge coach Neil VanLengen said. “Overall, it was a sloppy game. If we would have pulled it out, it would've been a sloppy win. There were a lot of unforced errors that neither team are used to making. They overcame their errors and we couldn't. They were able to get it done.”
KC Heimann had a match-high 32 kills for the Jaguars.
“We could not stop Heimann,” Exeter-Milligan coach Darcy White said. We could throw a block up on her and she could score on us. That girl is an awesome player.”
