Despite being state volleyball tournament regulars, even top-ranked Papillion-La Vista South isn't immune to tourney jitters.
“There's always some nervousness going in,'' Titans coach Gwen Egbert said. “Just getting used to the facility is part of it.''
Senior outside hitter Kadie Rolfzen, a Nebraska recruit who has competed in tournaments in foreign countries, agreed.
“It always takes a little bit of time to work the jitters out,'' she said. “It's the state tournament, after all.''
Papio South had little trouble in its first-rounder against Papillion-La Vista, sweeping to victory in three sets.
No lozenges needed for Pius students
All of that coughing from the Lincoln Pius X student section during its first-round match against Lincoln Southeast had less to do with sickness and more to do with the person who was serving — senior Maggie Kopf.
Before every serve, the coughs would break out among the students. Kopf ... cough ... get it?
Wildcats net win, now face Titans
Millard West posted its first-ever state tournament victory over Lincoln Southwest in its fourth tourney trip, but winning that second match will be an even greater challenge.
The Wildcats will face Papio South, a team that has been ranked in the top three nationally by two websites all season.
Monarchs hope for 2013 return
Despite her squad's season-ending loss against Papio South on Thursday, Papillion-La Vista coach Kristen Lebeda-Svehla was upbeat about her young team's chances for the future.
“I think this was a great experience for our team,'' she said. “We were a little shaky at the start, so I don't know if that was because of our youth or our adrenaline.''
The Monarchs will graduate four seniors, but three of their top four hitters will be back.
Southwest can't ride practice momentum
A strong practice right before the state tournament is usually a positive sign, but that wasn't the case for Lincoln Southwest.
The Silver Hawks were swept by Millard West, though Southwest coach Mary Schropfer said the team had practiced well leading up to the first-round match.
“We had a great practice yesterday,'' she said. “But that's just what kind of up and down season it's been for us.''
