Omaha firefighters found a man’s body early Tuesday inside a burning building just north of downtown.
Firefighters were doing a preliminary search of the abandoned two-story Mac’s Tavern on the southwest corner of 16th and Izard Streets when they found the body on the second floor, authorities said.
The victim’s name and the cause of the fire were unavailable Tuesday morning.
The fire in the narrow brick-and-white-stucco building was reported about 4:25 a.m. by a passer-by, said fire Capt. Tim McCaw. Firefighters reported heavy smoke on approach. They had the blaze under control about an hour later.
McCaw said “there’s a certain degree of risk’’ to firefighters battling blazes in abandoned buildings. At the old Mac’s Tavern, for example, the first set of stairs were unstable and firefighters were forced to locate a second set of stairs to the second floor, where the body was discovered in a southwest area of the building.
