LINCOLN — Nebraska will go into Wednesday’s men’s basketball exhibition against Midland University with seven scholarship recruits.
Coach Tim Miles revealed Monday that point guard Deverell Biggs out of Omaha Central will redshirt this season and that freshman wing Shavon Shields likely will miss the next two weeks after recent elbow surgery.
Biggs was a junior-college All-American last season at Seward County (Kan.) Community College. After sitting out, he will have two seasons to play two.
“It was a pretty quick conversation,” Miles said after pondering the decision with Biggs for several months.
Though Biggs is redshirting, he can play in the exhibition game without penalty, which Miles said he might do.
As for Shields, who is being counted on to contribute immediately, he underwent surgery Friday for an infection in a ruptured bursa sac in his elbow. Senior center Andre Almeida turned an ankle late last week, but should be ready Wednesday.
Biggs’ decision settles NU’s recruited scholarship roster for this season at eight, once Shields is healthy.
Three players have orally committed for 2013 and are expected to sign later this month. Two other scholarships remain available, with Miles still searching for a junior college big man.
Nebraska held open tryouts recently. Miles said the interest was good, but that he didn’t find anyone to add to the roster.
“(We weren’t going to take any) if I didn’t think a guy could come in and play in a game for us in a short amount of time,” he said. “I’m not sure we need more practice guys.”
