Creighton to get rare ‘Vienna Dioscorides’
Ken Wise, professor emeritus of political science and international relations at Creighton will present a rare, limited edition copy of the “Vienna Dioscorides” (worth about $10,000) to the university on Thursday.
The original book, published in the early sixth century, is a collection of descriptions and drawings of early herbal pharmacology, as well as images of poisonous animals and birds, compiled by physician and botanist Pedanius Dioscorides about A.D. 512 in Constantinople.
The book is being donated to Creighton by political science and business alumnus Ahmed Obaid Al Mansoori of Dubai.
Wise, who has been in Dubai the past seven years, will be on campus to give a lecture on “The New Silk Road Between Dubai and China: An American Perspective.”
