An Omaha police officer is charged with witness tampering and child abuse after being accused of covering up his daughter's allegations that her older brother molested her.
Authorities say the officer knew of the possible incest. The daughter, now 16, reported that it dated back to when she was 3 and her brother, now 21, was 8.
Over a number of years, according to court documents, the officer failed to report or seek help for his children.
In 2012, authorities say, the officer intentionally interfered with a police investigation by encouraging his children to minimize and lie about what had happened. He also is accused of giving false information to an investigator.
The officer was charged Tuesday in Washington County, his residence, with three felonies: witness tampering, child abuse and being an accessory to a felony. He was released from jail without posting bail.
The Omaha Police Department placed him on paid administrative leave, said Omaha Police Lt. Darci Tierney.
The officer is not being named because of The World-Herald's policy against naming the victims of sex crimes.
