Kroc Center hosts pumpkin patch party
The Salvation Army Kroc Center, 2825 Y St., will host a pumpkin patch party from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. today.The free party is open to the public.
Come in costume for games and prizes, a kid-friendly meal and a keepsake Halloween photo for each family.
Workshop to focus on end of life journey
A lingering death can be difficult for family and friends as they work to make decisions for a loved one. The University of Nebraska Medical Center and the University of Nebraska at Omaha will host a talk called “Being mindful: A thought- provoking journey about loss and end of life” from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 7.
The talk will be in the UNMC Durham Research Center Auditorium.

Halloween candy buy back available
Corpuz Family Dentistry, 13025 Arbor St., will buy back unopened Halloween candy from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday and Monday.
The office will pay $1 for each pound up to 5 pounds. The candy will be donated to the Open Door Mission and Cookie Crumbles-Treats for Troops.
Diabetes open house to offer free testing
Diabetes Education Center of the Midlands, 2910 S. 84th St., will have an open house from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday as part of Diabetes Awareness Month.
The event is free and open to the public.
Free health screenings will include a blood sugar check, blood pressure check and foot exam. Also expect yoga and stretch band demonstrations, and cooking demonstrations with food samples. Bring your medication list for the Ask the Pharmacist event.
A1C tests for average blood glucose levels will be available for $15.
Grant applications due soon in Bluffs
The Dodge Trust will accept applications for 2012 grants until 5 p.m. Nov. 16. The trust provides funding to charitable organizations and agencies serving Council Bluffs residents.
The trust’s board plans to distribute about $70,000 this year.

Speaker to discuss organized labor
John Kretzschmar will discuss “Organized Labor: The Folks Who Humanized the Employment Relationship” during a 2 p.m. Saturday talk at the W. Dale Clark Library, 14th and Farnam Streets.
Kretzschmar is director of the William Brennan Institute of Labor Studies at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
The group REASON (Rationalists, Empiricists And Skeptics Of Nebraska) will sponsor the event, which is free and open to the public.
