United Airlines has canceled all service today between Newark, N.J., and Omaha. US Airways has canceled its first flight from Omaha to Reagan National Airport today as well as its final flight tonight from Reagan National to Omaha. Frontier Airlines has not canceled any flights to the East Coast. Travelers are advised to call ahead to make sure their flight is on schedule.
» MidAmerican Energy on Tuesday dispatched a second team to the East Coast to help restore power and repair damage caused by Hurricane Sandy. The 13 MidAmerican employees who left Tuesday are based out of the Council Bluffs, Des Moines, Iowa City and Oskaloosa/Knoxville service centers. They were to travel to New York, where they will receive further orders. They're expected to be gone for up to two weeks.
The Des Moines-based utility on Saturday sent 15 employees — all based in western and central Iowa, including Council Bluffs, Red Oak and Shenandoah — to the Poughkeepsie, N.Y., area.
» The Nebraska Public Power District will send 16 workers to West Virginia to help Appalachian Power restore distribution lines to homes, spokesman Mark Becker said Tuesday. The workers, drawn from across Nebraska, were expected to leave about noon Wednesday.
Help from Omaha
Employees of an Omaha-based financial company with East Coast connections are feeling the effects of Hurricane Sandy firsthand.
About 83 Gemini Fund Services LLC employees will be going in early and staying late until further notice to pick up work from the company's Long Island, New York, office that employs 105 people. Gemini Fund Services LLC is a subsidiary of Omaha's Northstar Financial Services Group LLC, a holding company that has six investment and financial advisory firms and is based at 175th Street and West Center Road.
Gemini Fund Services LLC in Long Island, which closed its doors Monday, suffered no structural damage and currently has power from a backup generator supplied by a natural gas line, said Brian Nielsen, general counsel for Northstar Financial Services Group LLC. However, the main office remains without Internet access, which is why employees haven't returned, he said.
A team of trained disaster responders from Union College's International Rescue and Relief program left Lincoln Tuesday for a staging area in Pennsylvania. The team of 10 students has been instructed to pack for light search and rescue and swift water rescue operations.
