Jennifer Finn of Omaha thought her boyfriend was carving Halloween designs into pumpkins Saturday while they were watching the Michigan-Nebraska football game. But when Nick Sutton finally showed her what he had carved, she got a big surprise.
Instead of scary faces or laughing jack o’ lanterns, she found the words “Will you marry me?” carved into two pumpkins.
Her parents, Ed and Frances Finn, brother Tom and sister Amy — apparently in on the secret — had joined Jennifer and Nick for the game.
“We were all there,” Amy said. “She was pretty surprised.”
The couple have been dating about a year and a half, Jennifer said. They had discussed marriage in a vague way.
“Growing old together, sappy stuff. I thought he was afraid of it,” she said, laughing.
They are both students at Metropolitan Community College; she studies interior design and he is in the culinary arts program. Jennifer also is trying to get a dog-walking business off the ground and Nick works full time at Guggenheim for TD Ameritrade.
When will the wedding be?
“I’m thinking in a year,” Jennifer said. “He said less than five.”
