The World-Herald asked Nebraska's two U.S. Senate candidates to address several issues of importance in the 2012 campaign. This is the last in a series of topics and responses.
DEB FISCHER (R)
“We can't afford to continue nation-building in Afghanistan. Although I believe we should continue an orderly final withdrawal, I oppose a public timetable that reveals our strategy to our enemies. We also need to step up pressure on Pakistan and make future aid conditioned on their cooperation in the war on terror and our mission in Afghanistan.”
BOB KERREY (D)
Former governor and former U.S. senator
“We do not need to occupy a country in order to defend ourselves against the terrorism inside that country. We do not need to have our sons and daughters fighting a war inside Afghanistan in order to support democracy. I favor bringing our forces home without delay and making certain we do everything possible for them when their service ends.”
